Is Chiropractic Safe for Newborns?
Short answer: yes — when performed by a chiropractor with specialized pediatric training, newborn chiropractic care is one of the gentlest manual therapies a baby can receive.
The pressure used on a newborn is lighter than what you'd use to check if an avocado is ripe. There is no twisting, no popping, and no cracking. Many babies sleep through their adjustments.
Why specialized training matters
General chiropractors are trained primarily on adult spines. Pediatric chiropractors have additional post-graduate training on how infant anatomy, joint laxity, and nervous system development differ from adults. At Fika Chiropractic, Dr. Danika is both Webster Technique certified and PX Docs certified — the only PX Docs pediatric chiropractor within 50 miles of Oakland.
When researching safety, look for providers who:
- Have specific pediatric post-graduate training (ICPA, PX Docs, or equivalent)
- Use low-force, light-touch techniques designed for infants
- Perform a full infant assessment before any adjustment
- Explain their approach clearly and answer every question
When do parents bring a newborn in?
Most of the newborns we see are brought in for one of a few reasons:
- After a difficult birth — C-section, vacuum, forceps, long labor, or precipitous delivery
- Feeding difficulty — trouble latching, strong side preference, or clicking during nursing
- Excessive fussiness — crying that feels disproportionate to sleep and feeding patterns
- Head-shape asymmetry — flat spots (plagiocephaly) or head tilt (torticollis)
- Reflux or digestive issues — frequent spit-up, back-arching, or constipation
- Proactive support — parents who simply want their baby's nervous system checked after birth
None of these are conditions we treat directly. We support the nervous system so the body can regulate and recover more easily.
What happens at a newborn's first visit?
A newborn visit at Fika takes about 45 minutes and includes:
- A thorough birth and family history. We want the full story of pregnancy, labor, delivery, and the first days of life.
- An infant assessment. Gentle hands-on evaluation of cervical range, cranial symmetry, muscle tone, and reflex response.
- INSiGHT scans. Three non-invasive sensors measure heart rate variability, surface EMG, and thermal patterns. The scans are painless and take just a few minutes.
- A gentle first adjustment, if appropriate. Using single-finger pressure at the spine's natural joints. Many newborns are calm or asleep during the work.
